Gqeberha, South Africa, 10 October 2023 – The Coega Development Corporation (Coega), a state-owned entity, is proud to announce that it has achieved a Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (B-BBEE) Level 1 Certificate for the 2023/2024 financial year. This significant achievement places Coega at the forefront of transformation and empowerment in South Africa.

The B-BBEE Level 1 Certificate is a testament to Coega’s unwavering commitment to diversity and inclusion. It highlights the Corporation’s dedication to creating a more equitable and representative society, one that embraces the skills, talents, and contributions of all citizens.

One of the pillars of Coega’s success in achieving this B-BBEE Level 1 Certificate is its robust skills development programmes facilitated through the Coega Skills Development Centre. The Corporation has implemented comprehensive training initiatives to upskill and empower individuals from various backgrounds. Through partnerships with accredited training institutions, Coega has provided opportunities for personal and professional growth, ensuring that employees are equipped with the necessary skills to excel in their roles.

Ms. Mokgaetsi Sebothoma, Coega’s Executive Manager for Corporate Services said: “Reaching this significant milestone of Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) is a testament to our commitment to transformation, diversity, and inclusion. While it might not be the first time in history, it marks a pivotal moment for us.

Additionally, this achievement signifies our dedication to championing the implementation of government regulations that drive economic growth, diversity, and inclusion within South Africa. We aim to empower black-owned businesses, reduce unemployment, and break barriers at all organisational levels, from entry positions to executive roles for women, youth and people living with disabilities. Our journey towards transformation continues, and we are proud to contribute to a more inclusive and prosperous South Africa.”

Having a diverse workforce is crucial for any organisation, including state-owned entities. Coega recognises the importance of employment equity and has made great strides in this area. Through targeted recruitment and fair employment practices, the Corporation ensures that opportunities are available for all, regardless of their race, gender, or background.

Coega is also committed to supporting small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) and actively promotes their participation in its projects. By integrating SMMEs into their supply chains, Coega contributes to the sustainability and growth of these businesses, ultimately fostering economic development in local communities.

Further, women empowerment is a key focus for Coega. Coega actively promotes gender equality and strives to create an inclusive environment that enables women to thrive and unlock their full potential. By providing equal opportunities and support, Coega paves the way for more women to participate in various sectors, challenging traditional norms and stereotypes.

Earning the B-BBEE Level 1 Certificate for the 2023/2024 financial year is a significant achievement for Coega. It reaffirms the Corporation’s commitment to transformation and empowerment and serves as a reminder of the progress that can be made when organisations prioritise diversity and inclusion. Coega will continue to champion these principles, contributing to a more inclusive and prosperous South Africa.
